App Installation Screen

This screen allows the system user to apply restrictions to the device that will prevent the mobile user from installing specified apps.

NB App names are the names of the apps the mobile user sees E.g. Auto trader, whereas package names is the internal name of the app Android uses E.g. uk.co.autotrader.

There are two lists on the left hand side of the screen, these lists are the whitelist and blacklist lists and contain all the apps currently on the device. The whitelist is the exception to the blacklist, so if all apps were to be blacklisted on the device, the system user could add one app to the whitelist; This would mean all apps are blacklisted except the one app in the whitelist.

The lists on the left have the usual check ticks and the upper most check tick will select/deselect the entire list.

Below is app install screen.

Get All Apps

This allows the system user to retrieve all the apps currently installed on the device.

Add apps To Blacklist Once the system user has selected the apps to add to the blacklist, Add Apps To Blacklist button will add them to the blacklist on the device. The Blacklisted Packages list on the right will update to show the blacklisted packages.

Below are screenshots of how to add Auto trader to the blacklist.

Deselect the entire list on the left and select only Auto trader, then click Add Apps To blacklist button.

NB. Please note the blacklisted apps can be sent to the device straight away, sent to a group or added to a policy.

Below is the list showing Auto trader has been added to the blacklist and has appeared in the blacklisted packages list on the right.

Remove apps From Blacklist Once the system user has selected the apps to remove from the blacklist, Remove Apps From Blacklist button will remove them from the blacklist on the device. The Blacklisted Packages list on the right will update to show the blacklisted packages.

Get Blacklisted Apps

At any time the system user can refresh the blacklisted packages list.

Add Package Name To Blacklist

If the system user knows a package name of an app, the package name can be entered in this box. It will be added to the blacklist. This is useful if the system user wants to blacklist an app that is not currently on the device and doesn't want the mobile user to install it.

The * (asterisk character) can be used to specify all package names. The * is a wild card character and can be used replace other characters. For example, com.abc.def.ghi could be blacklisted by entering:

  • com.abc.def.ghi
  • com.abc.def.*
  • com.abc.*

com.abc.* would also block the following package name com.abc.xyz

Whitelist by App Name

To whitelist any apps is done in exactly the same way as blacklisting shown above. The whitelist is always the exception to the blacklist, so if the same package name appears in both whitelist and blacklist, the mobile user will still be able to install the app.
